Zydrunas Savickas Wins Iceman III

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2012 IronMind

Kuusamo, Finland–Just call him the Iceman because Zydrunas Savickas did it again, winning his third SCL Iceman in a row.

If your deadlifts are stuck, try this trick for motivation: go eyeball to eyeball with a bear, as Zydrunas Savickas did at the SCL Iceman today.  IronMind® | Randall J. Strossen photo.

The Iceman is not your ordinary strongman contest, so when today opened with a loading race, it was massive logs and ice blocks that were loaded onto a platform made from ice, and the deadlift, for example, put a bear in the mix.

On his way to his third consecutive victory in the Iceman, Zydrunas Savickas opened the contest today by setting the world record in the Viking Press with 165 kg x 12 reps.“In the beginning, we were pretty unlucky losing Terry Hollands and Jimmy Laureys, but were really happy Martin Wildauer came on such short notice.  On the first day, we had some rough weather—snow, wind, cold—but the athletes didn’t complain.  It’s the Iceman: whatever temperature or the weather, they will continue," contest organizer Ilkka Kinnunen told IronMind.

"Conan’s Wheel was really tough: only 4 athletes made the full circle.  Tomi Lotta was the only one to go over 70 meters, which made the Finns really happy.

"The Truck Pull Medley was extremely tough, especially with the truck pull as last part of the medley; Zydrunas and Tomi were the only ones to finish."Today was a sunny, beautiful day—perfect for the athletes and audience to enjoy the Iceman III," said Kinnunen.

Here are the final scores, officially.

1. Zydrunas Savickas    77.0

2. Laurence Shahlaei    71.5

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2012 IronMind

Marcel Mostert told IronMind today that once again, Strongman Champions League (SCL) will be partnering with Giants Live–the official qualifying tour for the World’s Strongest Man contest.

Giants Live and SCL will be at the Ramada Aqua World in Budapest, Hungary on June 17,2012 and the top three competitors are guaranteed invitations to this year’s World’s Strongest Man contest.

The two organizations will be joined in this production by the Hungarian Strongman Association (HSMA), for the Giants Live in the Ramada Aqua World in Budapest.Aqua World bills itself as being “One of the biggest indoor water theme parks in Hungary, and even Europe” and it is adjacent to the Ramada resort.Once again, this is an official World’s Strongest Man qualifier, and it signals the close working relationship between SCL and Giants Live.

“Like last year, when the Strongman Champions League cooperated with Giants Live in the Ukraine and Finland, we also will do some together again this year in Finland and Hungary,” Mostert said.  “We are really going to take further steps in the future.“We really like to work with Colin, as he is doing his job In a professional way.  Above the fact we know Colin already 15 years, we appreciate him as a great person to finish every job in a good way.  Colin will also do some job in our SCL organization.”Bryce was quick to return the compliments, saying, “Working with these SCL guys is awesome.  Their refereeing part is always the most professional and serious thing in any competition.  And I’m really happy with their organizing skills.  They know how to make strongman events!”

The Giants Live in Hungary will be a beautiful one,” said Mostert.  “When the weather is good, we will have a full packed venue and a very nice bath afterwards!

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2012 IronMind

Coming off a successful 2011 season, Strongman Champions League (SCL), the biggest tour on the professional strongman circuit, is growing again: 16 international shows will be hosted in 2012.Combine an Arctic location with some of the world’s top strongman competitors, give them a two-day, eight-event challenge “without temperature limit or weather reservations,” and you have the winning formula of the the SCL IceMan. SCL IceMan III has been announced: cold temperatures and hot performances. Remember the Bear Deadlift?! (See Photo)

Today arrived the equipment for our first show, March 8–9 , the Iceman III in Lapland. Brand-new yokes have been made by us: water, ice and snow proof! Other events are just beautiful as well.

Set in Kuusamo, Lapland March 9–10, 2012, the SCL IceMan III will take place around Ruka, SCL’s Ilkka Kinnunen told IronMind, with the events spread across three locations and the public having “free access to all competition venues.”

“Zydrunas will come here to defend his title and only 2 weeks ago he got a new world record on the ‘small’ SCL Log Lift (log was 28 cm) with 215 kg. We are proud to have this super athlete, multiple world record holder and always a gentleman, Zydrunas Savickas, again in the SCL Lapland.

Ervin Katona Wins SCL World Championships 2011

 by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2012 IronMind

Marcel Mostert called it an unbelievable experience as Sarajevo as the Strongman Champions League (SCL) contest collided head-on with a winter storm.

Ervin Katona (center) won the 2011 Strongman Champions League World Championships and received the US$15,000 Monster Milk–SCL check from SCL cofounders Marcel Mostert (left) and Ilkka Kinnunen (right). IronMind® | Courtesy of SCL.

Sarajevo "was covered under 2 meters of snow with a temperature of minus 15 and with the public traffic totally stopped. We had in 1 night 1.6 meters of snow fall," Marcel Mostert told IronMind.“Ervin Katona couldn’t even find his car back as he drove to the competition from Serbia.“Still, the show must go on, especially after the canceling from the finals in December and now again because of the snow.

   Is this Ervin Katona’s car?

“With great organizing and re organizing schedules from the SCL organization in Bosnia, we managed to have the finals on Monday instead of Saturday.Meanwhile, we had to wait three days to begin the finals, but because it was in a beautiful 5 star hotel with great food and drinks , it was not really a punishment. So, well rested and with full stomachs we could start on Monday in the Olympic Zetra Hall in Sarajevo, built in 1984 for the Olympics.

“And Ervin Katona felt like an Olympian when he was crowned as the World Champion SCL 2011. Andrus Muremets, Terry Hollands and Zydrunas Savickas have already won this title and now also Ervin Katona.“‘It’s the happiest day of my life, after being in second place two years to finally win the title!’He finished in the competition in third place, behind Jean-Francois Caron from Canada and the winner of Bosnia, Zydrunas Savickas. Caron did a great performance, as he finished again second place and with a win in the car deadlift of 370 kg with 10 reps.

“Zydrunas did a world record on the Log Lift with 215 kg. I have never seen Zydrunas doing a log lift so easy with these kilograms. UNBELIEVEBLE. The man is in great shape—maybe the best ever! The log was a bit thinner than the official log we always use for world records, as it is normally above a 30 cm diameter. This log was 27 cm and therefore we recognize it as a world record on the ‘small’ log. But it’s just a matter of time and Zydrunas will do this year already a 220 log I think.

Marcel Mostert (left) said he thinks Zydrunas Savickas (right) will do a 220-kg log this year. IronMind® | Courtesy of SCL.

“In total US$30,000 was been paid to the athletes and the Monster Milk SCL cheque of US$15,000 went of course to the new SCL world champion, Ervin Katona.   “Laurence Shahlaei couldn’t be at the finals at the last moment and was replaced by Lauri Nami of Estonia. Still, he was already in a safe third place. Gregor Stegnar had a wild card as the local here in Bosnia," Mostert said.

Here are the official final places and points:

1.      Zydrunas Savickas (Lithuania)       59.0

2.      Jean-Francois Caron (Canada)        51.5

3.      Ervin Katona (Serbia)                   50.0

4.      Jimmy Laureys (Belgium)              43.5

5.      Lauri Nami (Estonia)                    37.0

6.      Martin Wildauer (Austria)              36.0

7.      Konstiantin Ilin (Ukraine)              32.0

8.      Tomi Lotta (Finland)                     30.0

9.      Agris Kazelniks (Latvia)                25.0

10.    Gregor Stegnar (Slovenia)              15.5

11.    Akos Nagy (Hungary)                      9.5

And the overall top three for the 2011 SCL World Championships, officially were:

1.      Ervin Katona Serbia)                  195

2.      Zydrunas Savickas (Lithuania)     175

3.      Laurence Shahlaei (Iran)             106

“This final will be broadcast at 24 February on Eurosport," Mostert said. Our first contest of the new season 2012 starts already in four weeks, the SCL Lapland 2012 [aka The Iceman III) on March 9. More news about this coming soon.

“Welcome to the new season 2012!”

SCL Finals 2011 Moved to Sarajevo

“Due some unexpected political problems in the Ukraine we had to reschedule the SCL finals ,” Marcel Mostert told IronMind today, “and we are set now for Sarajevo, in Bosnia.”

Explaining that time had been lost as SCL tried to keep things on track for the Ukraine, Mostert said this forced an accelerated pace in preparing for this competition, but all the pieces are now in place and “the most important thing is that we are doing it.”
“It will happen one week later [than planned for the Ukraine], on February 4 in the Zetra Olympic Hall Juan Antonio Samaranch in Sarajevo.
“This hall was built for the 1984 Winter Olympic Games, and so far it is the largest facility of this type in Bosna and Herzegovina. We are happy that we could reschedule this so fast, with great help from our SCL organization in Bosnia (  www.fitnessuniverse.ba ) and their main sponsor  DUBLI LTDwww.dubli.com
 )

“It will be a hard fight over 7 events with 12 finalists, especially between Zydrunas Savickas and Ervin Katona, because both can still win the title SCL World Champion 2011, powered by Monster Milk,” said Mostert

Events
• Power Team Forward Hold
• Truck Pull
• Log lift
• Atlas Stones
• Wheel Flip
• Medley
• Car Dead lift

“Zydrunas Savickas, Andrus Murumets and Terry Hollands were the former overall champions in previous years. Will Ervin Katona finally succeed as well and join this impressive list? It’s going to be exciting and all other athletes will earn double ranking points.
“The whole competition will be recorded and to be seen at 24 February at Eurosport,” said Mostert, "with US$15000 for the overall champion, and another $15,000 for the competitors in this contest."

Continuing where he left off last month, Zydrunas Savickas also won SCL Latvia last weekend,” Marcel Mostert told IronMind.Zydrunas Savickas was reportedly in top shape when he won SCL Latvia last weekend.Jean-Francois Caron took a second place again, and local hero Agris Kazelniks was on his best finish of the whole year in his hometown with a third place.

Zydrunas won it pretty easily; he was in very good shape. The field behind him to sixth was a real battle, as you can see in the final results.“Ervin Katona disappointed in the end, because after each event he dropped 1 place, from second place to seventh place.  He told us that unfortunately his battery went totally empty on this important competition day.

It was a great ambiance in the Riga Arena, the biggest ice hockey arena in Latvia.  Around 4000 spectators saw a great show with Raimond Bergmanis coming down from the roof flown on a cable in the opening show. Together with fireworks, dancers and big drums, a great opening, perfectly done thanks to our SCL co-organizer, the Latvian organization, with Raimonds Bergmanis as the special guest.

The grand finale of the Monster Milk Strongman Champions League will be on 17 December in Kiev.“Also, there will be double ranking points earned and still Zydrunas or Ervin can win the SCL World title 2011," Mostert said.

Here are the top 10 results Latvia, officially:

Fueled by Monster Milk, Strongman Champions League (SCL) continues to roll out contest after contest and last weekend it was Bulgaria’s turn to host the biggest strongman tour on the 2011 calendar.Last weekend, Bulgaria hosted the seventh SCL contest of the year, and Ervin Katona retained his overall lead in the biggest strongman series this year.  IronMind® | Courtesy of SCL.

Ervin Katona strikes again in SCL Bulgaria!,” Marcel Mostert reported to IronMind as the Serbian strongman won his second SCL competition of the year and retains the overall leader’s T-shirt.Mostert said it was “a strong field with 13 competitors . . . it was again a heavy battle with a close finish, like in Holland last week.”
How close?

Ervin Katona edged out Vytautas Lalas by a mere half a point for the victory.“Vytautas was leading until the last event by a half point, but he lost the Atlas Stones to Ervin by just 0.49 seconds.  He loaded 5 stones up to 180 kg in 18.42 seconds, but Ervin did it in 17.93 seconds, which gave him the win and 25 points in the overall ranking of the Monster Milk SCL series.“Also, the third place was very exciting, where Rob Frampton and Konstiantin Ilin ended both with 58 points, but Rob had a better placing in the events, which gave him a place on the top 3 podium,” said Mostert.  “Laurence Shahlaei got a small injury during the truck pull in Bulgaria and had to pull out, but he still remains on second place in the ranking.”

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2011 IronMind

Smile when you say “Nice Dutch weather” because at least for Strongman Champions League - Holland that meant sun mixed with wind, a thunderstorm and rain, the same sort of dramatic back and forth that has pitted Laurence Shahlaei and Ervin Katona in a  tug of war as the SCL season Econtinues.Etienne Smit (bottom) and Konstiantyn Ilin (top) race in the Tire Flip.  IronMind® | Courtesy of SCL.

“It was a fantastic close finish in the rain and sun in Holland last weekend,” Marcel Mostert reported to IronMind: “Laurence Shahlaei and Ervin Katona ended up with equal points in the Strongman Champions League Holland, but Laurence had more wins, so he took the overall win and 25 champions league points, which brought him to second place in the ranking over 6 stages so far.  Ervin Katona remains as the overall leader in the orange Monster Milk leader’s shirt.“Especially the last event, the anchor drag, was full of nice drama.  In the rain, with a slippery surface and handles , Jimmy Laureys from Belgium defeated Johannes Arsjo in the last event and took over third place overall from Johannes.  And also the first and second place was still at stake here.

“It was typical Dutch weather with hard wind, nice sun, but also rain and thunder came along. The SCL Holland, powered by Monster Milk , was a real  fight in heavy circumstances ,but ended in a sunny and warm price giving in the evening.“The 14 competitors came up in  a spectacular “Miami Vice” opening (athletes came into the arena through the big “RIJN canal” on 3 powerful boats from Shipyard “De Hoop”) with sunglasses in the rain and music from the series “Miami Vice”. Show and entertainment made it complete!  The crowd loved it!

“This was already the 6th stage from Strongman Champions League 2011.  The third stage, SCL Serbia will be broadcasted at coming Friday, 20.00 hours.  Check also all our broadcast dates for 2011 at our website,” Mostert said.

Here are the top ten overall from SCL Holland:

1.  Laurence Shahlaei (Iran) 67.5
2.  Ervin Katona (Serbia)  67.5
3.  Jimmy Laureys (Belgium) 54.5
4.  Johannes Arsjo (Sweden) 49.5
5.  Agris Kazelniks (Latvia) 46.0
6.  Warrick Brant (Australia) 45.0
7.  Konstiantyn Ilin (Ukraine) 42.0
8.  Alex Moonen (Holland) 41.5
9.  Rick v/d Torre (Holland) 37.5
10.  Martin Wildauer (Austria) 35.5
And here are the top five* overall in 2011 SCL season tour to date:

Vitautas Lalas finished with 57 points, followed by Laurence Shahlaei at 56.6 points and Ervin Katona at 52.5 points.“The fifth stage of the SCL was again a successful competition,” said SCL cofounder Marcel Mostert.  “It was a tough competition, with 35-degree (C) temperatures inside—there is no air conditioning in Finland!                    “Ervin Katona keeps the orange T-shirt,” said Mostert, referring to the what marks the overall leader of the season, “and the SCL continues next week in Holland.”“Nice events,” said Jyrki Rantanen, “with quite a nice level in the deadlift and 187.5 kg on the log is not something we see too often in Finland.”

Strongman Champions League Signs Deal with Cytosport Monster Milk

  by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2011 IronMind

In a statement released to IronMind, Strongman Champions League has announced that Monster Milk has signed up as the overall sponsor for the biggest series in strongman, SCL.Monster Milk has become the overall sponsor for the Srongman Champions League.  IronMind® | Courtesy of SCL.

....................

Following is the press release:

“The SCL made again another step forward, by signing a deal with Monster Milk as the overall sponsor for the whole Strongman Champions League.  All stages are now powered by Monster Milk, a brand from Cytosport.  CytoSport offers a complete line of protein-enhanced powders, shakes and bars to provide healthy, sustained energy to athletes and active lifestyle consumers alike

Monster Milk, from CytoSport, is an all-in-one, advanced muscle building complex with amazing taste satisfaction.  The all-new, stronger Monster Milk features a powerful 50 gram sustained-release protein.  We are very happy that the board of Cytosport believes in our strength and expanding future!
The SCL is a worldwide broadcast league over 12 stages throughout the year n 12 different countries.”Commenting on this major new sponsor, SCL cofounder Marcel Mostert told IronMind, “We are very happy with this deal.  Monster Milk gives us the ability to develop more quality with powerful events and athletes.  Now the SCL can grow further and faster, and we see Monster Milk as the perfect partner for the future.”

In a year when other strongman organizers are struggling to put on single contests, SCL is continuing its attack off the front with its full-fledged series of strongman contests, and this partnership with Monster Milk underlines SCL’s commitment and ability to further develop its concept of an international strongman tour.

And talking about leading the pack, SCL has introduced a way to indicate the season leader at the start of each contest: watch for the orange T-shirt with the Monster Milk logo, as it will be worn by the SCL overall season leader at that time.  So, when SCL-Finland begins today, the man of the hour will be Ervin Katona— his orange shirt indicating that he’s the leader of the SCL tour.

Laurence Shahlaei Debuts in Strongman Champions League and Wins SCL S.AFRICA

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2011 IronMind

Strongman Laurence Shahlaei has been short of talk and big on the walk, and now it’s no secret: this guy’s a comer at the highest levels, and to underscore the point that Loz is in town, he celebrated his Strongman Champions League (SCL) debut with a victory party.
Left to right: Laurence Shahlaei (center) won SCL–South Africa, with Etienne Smit (right) coming in second and Warrick Brant (left) coming in third.  IronMind® | Courtesy of SCL.

Laurence Shahlaei wins SCL–South Africa ,by Marcel Mostert
It was his first time in the Strongman Champions League and he hit right here! Laurence Shahlaei, originally from Iranian parents, gave his business card right away .... and how! He won the truck pull, made no less than 8 reps in the 345 deadlift kg and a new personal record in the log for ma. with 185 kg.  This gave him three times full score, and a solid base for the first place overall.  A great entrance for him in the SCL. Etienne Smith grabbed the second place overall in his home country which made him very happy, and Warrick Brant knew just half a point to stay ahead of Christian Savoy, good for third place. Johannes Arsjo got hit with a small injury in his lower back, as he pushed himself just a bit to much at the deadlift for reps.  It was a pity for him, as he might had the possibility to take the lead in the SCL overall ranking.
This was already the fourth stage of the SCL, now in the wild country of lions and elephants.  Complete with athletes from all continents. The big five were in Africa!  But the SCL train runs fast to its next stop, coming weekend already will be the fifth stage, the SCL Finland.  Also Laurence will compete again there. Will he strike again?

Here are the official final scores from SCL–South Africa:

Top 10  SCL South Africa:

1.  Laurence Shahlaei (Iran) 55.0
2.  Etienne Smit (South Africa) 46.0
3.  Warrick Brant (Australia) 40.0
4.  Christian Savoie (Canada) 39.5
5.  Agris Kazelniks (Latvia) 36.0
6.  Gerrit Van Staaden (South Africa) 31.5
7.  Matt Wanat (USA) 25.0
8.  Frankie Schize (South Africa) 23.5
9.  Alex Moonen (Holland) 22.0
10.  Johannes Arsjo (Sweden) 16.5

Ervin Katona won the third stage in SCL 2011. He won three events and broke the world record on the Viking press,  with 150 kg for 22 reps!  Very impressive. Johannes Arsjo from Sweden took the second place and Jimmy Laureys from Belgium the  third place overall.  Jimmy is coming slowly into his best shape ever.  Martin Wildauer, the deadlift kid, just missed the podium by 1 point.

There was a big tractor expo in Novi Sad, who sponsored mainly our SCL there in cooperation with CASE tractors.  The people there did a great job and want to see us next year again! Hopefully the tractor to pull will be a little bit lighter next year, as the pull was a real killer for the athletes. Yes, even strongman have a limit, ha ha!
Ervin Katona is also taking the lead now in the overall Strongman Champions League ranking,” said Mostert, with 52 points, just ahead of Zydrunas Savickas with 50 points. So, we are ready for the fourth stage  of SCL , on June 4 in Johannesburg-Pretoria, the SCL South Africa.  The strongman champions league train rides again!

Stay tuned, and watch also this coming Friday, May 27, on Eurosport, the SCL Germany–FIBO POWER,” Mostert said.

SCL Germany (FIBO POWER) Won by Zydrunas Savickas

It was the first time in years that I saw so many visitors this year at the FIBO expo in Germany and according to me and many others it was the best FIBO ever. The SCL had a big impact there: With a strong field of athletes, a packed crowd and a perfect organization by Heinz Ollesch and his GFSA team, we had all ingredients for a successful weekend at the FIBO.Zydrunas won the second SCl competition of the year, with Terry Hollands second and Martin Wildauer ("The Deadlift Kid") in third place,  just a half point in front of Ervin Katona. It was an exciting show, especially because Zydrunas struggled on the first event, the log lift.  He was just able to do a 182.5 kg log and won it closely ahead of Patrick Babaumian (177.5 kg) and Terry Hollands (175 kg)Also, it must be noted that this was a giant wooden log with a diameter of 36 cm !! (normally 31 cm), and Zydrunas has an elbow injury at the moment.

The FIBO  is still growing every year and has implemented the strongman scene in a great way, done by manager Jens Thieme and Heinz Ollesch, and a great step in this was the revolutionary birth of FIBO POWER, with an impressive list of athletes who competed here already.  Champions from all over the world and world records came to the FIBO since we are there.

The list of winners so far from the FIBO POWER Strongman Champions League since it begun:

2007  Jarno Hams (Holland)
2008  Igor Werner (Germany)
2009  Travis Ortmayer (USA)
2010  Misha Koklyaev (Russia)
2011  Zydrunas Savickas (Lithuania)

Here are the official overall results from SCL Germany FIBO 2011:
1. Zydrunas Savickas  70 points
2. Terry Hollands  55.5
3. Martin Wildauer  53
4. Ervin Katona  52.5
5. Jimmy Laureys  49.5
6. Travis Ortmayer  45

7. Etienne Smit  44.5
8. Konstatin Illin  39.5
9. Patrik Baboumian  32.5
10. Jarno Hams  32
11. Juan Carlos Herridia  26

He might have had some rough moments early in the contest, but as predicted, Zydrunas Savickas came back strongly and defended his title in the IceMan—an Arctic strongman challenge.

“The second day in the Iceman started with the Human Ski Lift, an arm over arm pull “where athletes pulled 6 girls on skis 20 meters uphill,” Ilkka Kinnunen reported to IronMind.  “Ervin Katona had the fastest time, using excellent technique.  His time was 26.18 seconds.  Etienne Smitt was second, at 27.43 seconds. and third was Johannes Årsjö at 32.63 seconds.  “Next was the Log Lift (140 kg) for reps.  Savickas won with 9 reps; Ervin Katona and Konstantyn Ilin both did 7 reps. “In third event of the day, the athletes lifted in Deadlift for reps a 320-kg brown bear. Zydrunas Savickas did only as many as he needed to take first place, 9 reps.  Martin Wildauer was second with 8 reps, then Johannes Årsjö, Rauno Heiinla and Ervin Katona equal with 6 reps.“After three morning events athletes had few hours rest before hitting the last two events of the Iceman 2011.

“In Kuusamo city behind a great Hotel Kuusamo is a great amphitheater and it was packed with people.  The sky started to get dark and the temperature was under -10 C when first evening event, Truckpull and Loading, started.

“First athletes had to load two 100-kg sacks on the end of the trcuk and then run to the front of the truck and pull it with a harness and rope: 12,500-kg heavy truck total, 20 meters. The athletes wore special mountaineering spikes [crampons] on their boots to get a good grip from the ground.  The best time was done by Zydrunas Savickas, 29.84 seconds; second was Johannes Årsjö, 32.43 seconds and third was Ervin Katona, 33.32 seconds.
“The last event was the Loghouse Carry using same system as in Car Walk.  Athletes had to carry the 360-kg Loghouse Frame a distance of 23 meters.  The fastest man was Big Z at 11.90 seconds, second ws Johannes Årsjö at 12.52 seconds and third was Etienne Smitt at 12.91 seconds.”

Here are the top eight final places and scores, officially:

1.  Zydrunas Savickas 89.0
2.  Johannnes Arsjo 86.5

4.  Rauno Heinla 67.5
5.  Konstantyn Ilin 60.0
6.  Tomi Lotta 58.5
7.  Etienne Smitt 56.0
8.  Christian Savoie 52.5

Wasting no time in looking to next year, “IceMan 2012 is already signed and preparations will start next month,” Kinnunen told IronMind.

“On August 13th, as a part of a Power Truck Show, the men behind the Strongman Champions League, Ilka [Kinnunen] and Marcel [Mostert], are helping me to create the first Giants Live: The World Strongest Man Qualifying show in Finland,” Colin Bryce told IronMind. Giants Live—the official qualifying tour of the World’s Strongest Man show—is coming to Finland, thanks to a collaborative agreement with Strongman Champions League (SCL).

(Photo left to right) Colin Bryce (Giants Live/Power Productions) hooks up with Ilkka Kinnunen (SCL) and Marcel Mostert (SCL)

“We will be looking to do a one day, six-discipline competition in front of a very big crowd.  There will no doubt be a lot of Scandinavians on the list as we hope to unturn some more talent from the part of the World that gave us Jouko Ahola, Janne Virtanen, Svend Karlsen, Magnus Samuelsson, to name but a few. Almost certainly invites will go out to other parts of Europe and potentially the States, too.“The possible Finns looking likely to gain qualification through there recent results and past successes include Tomi Lotta, Pedro Karlsson, and Juha Matti Jarvi.
“The top three from this Giants Live will be qualified to the World Strongest Man show.  The entire TV production will be co-produced by Fitness Media of Finland and Power Productions UK for a Eurosport broadcast sometime in September/October,” said Bryce.

Lithuania Sweeps Log Lift World Championships

15 FEBRUARY 2011

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2011 IronMind
Zydrunas Savickas had a close miss with a world record attempt, there were a lot of missed attempts and the final results were not as high as expected, but at least one thing did go according to plan: Zydrunas Savickas won the 2011 Log Lift World Championship this past weekend.Of the twelve competitors, three bombed—both Tommi Lotta and Markes Leitas missed 170 kg three times, and Konstantin Illin missed 175 kg three times. Agris Kazelniks (175 kg),  Bjorn Andre Solvang (175 kg) and Vytautas Lalas (185) only made one good lift; and at the other end of the spectrum, only Patrick  Baboumian made three good lifts (175, 180, 185 kg). With a best lift of 192.5 kg in 3 attempts for Zydrunas, it was not his best performance, but enough to get the Log Lift World Championships title again in the Siemens Arena in Vilnius.
Not only Zydrunas, but all the athlets where very nervous and struggled with the big, thick, former IFSA log from stainless steel.  A few reasons where mentioned for this struggling by the athletes: It is early in the season, the IFSA log is a very difficult log because of its size and length, and the warm up was in another hall with another log. This makes it all not easier. Also, the whole event was live on Eurosport, which gives extra pressure to the athletes because of the tight time schedule and strict rules by 3 referees. The whole event took exactly one hour but was anyway a success and we have to give credit for all the athletes to do such an effort in these circumstances. After all, 180 kg with the steel log is still a very great result.Or, as Bjorn Solvang from Norway said to me: “At home I can do easy 180 for 3 reps, but with this log I’m already happy to get 175 kg 1 time.” That's exactly the difference!
Vidas Blekaitas took 2nd place with 190 kg and Vytautas Lalas 3rd place with 185 kg.  He missed 195 kg two times after being very close there.  He gambled too high to beat Zydrunas.Patrick Baboumian was the only one who broke his national record, in his case 185 kg for a new German record and 4th place overall.  Also Ervin Katona hit the 185 kg.  The reason that Vytautas got 3rd place with 185 is that he got his 185 kg already in the first attempt.

Top 6 results:

1.  Zydrunas Savickas 192.5 kg
2.  Vidas Blekaitis 190.0 kg
3.  Vytautas Lalas 185.0 kg
4.  Patrick Baboumian 185.0 kg
5.  Ervin Katona 185.0 kg
6.  Warrick Brant 182.5 kg

The Log Lift World Championships will be replayed on Eurosport at Sunday 20 February.

“We expect at least four guys going through the 200-kg barrier and hopefully Zydrunas [Savickas] can do a new world record,” said Mostert. Zydrunas Savickas holds the current world record on this event: 212.5 kg.

“In the same weekend as the Strongman Champion League finals, we did in Kiev the 105-kg Strongman World Championships,” Marcel Mostert reported to IronMind.

Vitaly Gerasimov broke the world record on the Circus Dumbbell at the 105-kg SCL 105-kg Strongman World Championships.  IronMind® | Photo courtesy of SCL.

“[It was] a very exciting contest until the bitter end, where Vitaly Gerasimov from the Ukraine and Aleksander Mancerov from Russia had equal points until the last event, the car squat for reps.Mancerov did an outstanding performance with 14 reps, but on his right side, at the same time, Gerasimov managed to push out 16 reps and won the title World Strongest Man 105 Kg.Topi Fridtfeld from Finland surprised everybody and finished as 3rd place overall.
There was also a worldrecord: Vitaly Gerasimov did an impressive 12 reps with [an] 80-kg dumbbell.  This is the same dumbbell as used in the SCL Finals and with same measurements as on the Arnold Classic.

Here are the top ten scores, officially:

1.  Vitaliy Gerasimov (Ukraine)               55
2.  Akexsander Mancerov (Russia)                    54
3.  Topi Fryfeeld (Finland)                      35
4.  Oleksander Krivchenkov (Ukraine)       34

We will be back next year for sure, but then hopefully without loads of snow.

Terry Hollands is the 2010 SCL Champion !!!

Great Britain’s mighty Terry Hollands, a former rugby player turned strongman, was crowned the 2010 Strongman Champions League (SCL) overall winner this weekend in Kiev.
Terry Hollands (center) won the overall 2010 Strongman Champions League title.  Misha Koklyaev (left) was third and Ervin Katona (right) was second.  IronMind® | Photo courtesy of SCL.

As if the contest itself didn’t pose sufficient challenges, the winter storms sweeping across Europe only added to the demands put on the athletes and organizers, alike.
“The [conditions for getting] to Kiev last weekend were really bad because of the weather,” SCL cofounder Marcel Mostert reported to IronMind.  “Lots of snow all over Europe [left] athletes stuck at airports in various cities in Europe.   Unfortunately, some athletes couldn’t make it on time, like Travis Ortmayer who got [stranded] at the airport - A real pity for him as he was standing in third place overall in the Champions League.
“So we started with 9 athletes total, with Zydrunas Savickas, not as competitor today, but helping as a speaker and pleasing the crowd.
“The SCL Ukraine was won by Sergei Romanchuk from the Ukraine, followed by Agris Kazelniks on second place and Misha Koklyaev 3th.

“Misha was leading the whole contest , but lost it in the fourth event, the Conan’s Wheel completely, as he got dizzy and stopped the 350-kg wheel already after 10 meters.
“This opened the chances for Romanchuk, Agris and Terry Hollands to take the Ukrainian SCL title.  Romanchuk grabbed the title because of his outstanding good performance after six events. Terry Hollands took fifth place, but had enough points to win the overall title and got crowned as the Strongman Champions League winner 2010.
“Kontantin Ilin broke the world record of Derek Poundstone, also set in Kiev in May earlier this year during the Giants Live show.  He did an impressive 10 reps with the one arm dumbbell of 95 kg.
“It was a long, cold weekend in the Ukraine, but with a great final and and some hot drinks afterwards,  we ended with a smile,” Mostert said.

Here are the official scores from the SCL-Ukraine:

1.  Sergey Romanchuk (Ukraine)   46.0
2. Agris Kazelniks (Latvia)            38.5
3.  Mikhail Koklyaev (Russia)       36.5
4.  Konstantin Ilyin (Ukraine)        34.5
5.  Terry Hollands (England)         27.5
6.  Golier Brano (Slovakia)             25.5
7.  Akos Nagi (Hungary)                19
8.  Antti Moruiyaaaavi (Finland)   14

Mostert told IronMind that more than 50 different athletes competed in the Strongman Champions League this year.

Here are the top three, overall:

1.  Terry Hollands (United Kingdom)  132 Points
2.  Ervin Katona (Serbia)                  106
3.  Mikhail Koklyaev (Russia)              98

Terry Hollands (leftt) and Ervin Katona (right) are coming into the 2010 Strongman Champions League Grand Finale in first and second place, respectively.  Who will leave Kiev as the overall SCL champion this year?  IronMind® | SCL photo.

The very popular top British strongman Terry Hollands got off to a roaring start this year and seemed destined for the World’s Strongest Man podium among other things, but he got slowed down by a torn biceps.  The big man bounced back and he’ll be in Kiev, coming into the SCL finals as the overall points leader.
SCL cofounder Marcel Mostert told IronMind that “almost 50 athletes competed in the SCL” this year, with “the top 8 automatically qualified” for the SCL Grand Finale, and “number 9 and 10 as a reserve [Warrick Brant and Golier Brano].”  The host country’s Sergei Romanchuk will also compete, Mostert said, “and we might have a few wildcards left.”  The points for the final will be counted as double points, which means that the winner gets 50 points, nr. 2 gets 36 points, etc.

SCL top eight overall:

1.  Terry Hollands (England) 112
2.  Ervin Katona (Serbia) 102
3.  Travis Ortmayer (USA) 77
4.  Misha Kolyaev (Russia) 68
5.  Agris Kazelniks (Latvia) 59
6.  Zydrunas Savickas (Lithuania) 50
7.  Konstiantyn Ilin (Ukarine) 36
8.  Johannes Arsjo 28

Based on the way the finals will be scored, Mostert said, “This means that the absolute winner can be still [any] one of the top four athletes in the ranking, and theoretically the number 8 can still get a third place overall.”
The overall SCL title was won by Andrus Murumets in 2009 and by Zydrunas Savickas in 2008.  For a complete list of SCL point standings this season, please visit the official SCL website (see Results 2010 and Rankings).Firm about the position of SCL in the strongman world, Marcel Mostert told IronMind, "The Strongman Champions League is at the moment the biggest and most important league in the world for strongman athletes!

Ervin Katona just added his third Strongman Champions League victory to his 2010 collection of titles. Here’s the log lift for reps, showing Terry Hollands against Golier Brano, with Ilkka Kinnunen and Marcel Mostert refereeing.  IronMind® | Photo courtesy of SCL.

Last Sunday, The Strongman Champions League–Slovakia was the 3rd victory for Ervin Katona this year.
His hands were healed from the past World’s Strongest Man contest and so he showed how strong he really was.
With Louis Vigo, the famous soccer player from Portugal, promoting the UEFA cup on one side of the new boulevard in Bratislava, the other side was filled with strongman fans.  It was really a nice day with 20 degrees [68 F] in October and a crowd cheering the whole afternoon for our strongmen.  We had great help from the organization SASIM and the Bratislava government.
Terry Hollands, Ervin Katona, and Konstantin Ilin all they came to win the SCL Slovakia, and it was exciting.   After five events, Ervin was just a half point behind Terry Hollands, the current leader of the SCL tour 2010.  Ervin impressed on the last event, the Atlas Stones, by doing the last stone , the 190-kg killer, the fastest in the field.  Terry Holland came third on these stones, and so lost his possible victory of the day to Ervin.
Brano Golier, the local hero from Slovakia, did his best performance ever in the SCL and came fourth overall.  Martin Wildauer from Austria satisfied himself as well: After a big pec injury earlier this year, he made his comeback and finished in the top 6.”

Here are the top 6 results:

1.  Ervin Katona (Serbia) 57.0
2.  Terry Hollands (UK) 55.5
3.  Konstantin Ilin (Ukraine) 48.0
4.  Brano Golier (Slovakia) 42.5
5.  Matt Wanat (USA) 37.5
6.  Martin Wildauer (Austria) 35.5

“In 35 degree [95 F] heat, Ervin Katona was the best of the rest,” Marcel Mostert told IronMind, as the Serbian strongman picked up his second Strongman Champions League (SCL) victory of the 2010 season.                        After winning the SCL–Bulgaria earlier this year, Ervin Katona won in his own country his second Strongman Champions League contest of the 2010 season, the SCL–Serbia.
Newcomer Gery Schlier from Austria did a good job and got fifth place, just 1 point ahead of Golier Brano from Slovakia and Simon Sulaimon from Syria.Ervin Katona is now on the third place on the Strongman Champions League ranking [for the 2010 season], with Terry Hollands still leading. Looking ahead, Mostert said, “The finals in the Ukraine in November will crown the overall winner of 2010,” a title that Andrus Murumets won in 2009 and Zydrunas Savickas won in 2008.

Here are the official results for the top six from SCL–Serbia:

1.  Ervin Katona        60.0
2.  Agris Kazelniks     42.0
3.  Gabor Fargacs      38.5

Travis Ortmayer Wins Strongman Champions League – Holland

21 June 2010

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2010 IronMind
The Texas Stoneman - Travis Ortmayer - notched up his first ever Strongman Champions League (SCL) victory this weekend, as he took top honors in Holland, and he also made some strongman history: Marcel Mostert told IronMind that this was the first time an American won an SCL competition.
“I was really starting to worry about making your prediction [about having a terrific year] come true until last weekend in Holland!,” Travis Ortmayer told IronMind’s Randall Strossen today. “I've just been crap lately at the other shows. Weight loss and no training will do that to you I guess. So will a total lack of sleep due to a little one waking you up all night!  I ended up winning that show, and on my first Father's Day no less.  It was my 80th competition too- man I feel old.
“So there you go; my last big Grand Prix until WSM was a win, and I think this will give me some good momentum for my preparation,” Ortmayer said.

Marcel Mostert filed this report with IronMind.

Sunday, 20 June 2010: This was a great competition in Holland with Travis Ortmayer defeating Misha Koklyaev in a thrilling fight and SCL Holland was the first SCL [competition] won by an American.
Travis was so determined to do well, after missing the podium from last two SCL contests. (4th and 5th place), he came to get in the top 3 again, but instead, he won the SCL Holland.
It was a real exciting fight between Travis,Misha, Ervin and Etienne Smit from South Africa.
With just 1 point between this top 4, the decision fell in the last event , the atlas stones, where the Texas Stoneman showed why he had this nickname.  Etienne Smit disappointed himself with the stones, as he stopped after the 2nd stone. He made a mistake and the stone fell on his chin, he got dizzy and stopped himself.
The comeback of Jarno Hams was not as he expected.  He did a great rock lift with a 2nd place behind Travis , but got there also a little injury on his wrist, and with the knowledge of having the Dutch Nationals in 3 weeks, he decided to stop after 3 events.
With thanks to our co-organizer Paul Rabelink and Wunderland Kalkar, and the great performance of our athletes, we are very satisfied with the edition SCL Holland 2010.

Here are the the overall results:

1.  Travis Ortmayer (USA)          70.0
2.  Misha Koklyaev (Russia)        66.0
3.  Ervin Katona (Serbia)            65.5
4.  Etienne Smit (South Africa)    52.5
5.  Warrick Brant (Australia)        44.0
6.  Agris Kazelniks (Latvia)          40.0
7.  Jimmy Laureys (Belgium)       40.0
8.  Jan Wagenaar (Holland)         35.0
9.  Konstantin Ilin (Ukraine)        35.0

UFSA, SCL and Giants Live Set To Converge on Kiev

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2010 IronMind

Three strongman organizations, two body weight classes and one location will produce “two great shows at the same venue in the heart of Kiev,” Strongman Champion League’s Marcel Mostert told IronMind today.
Handing his camera to IronMind’s Randall Strossen at the 2009 World’s Strongest Man contest, Marcel Mostert said: “Randy—take a presidential picture of Colin and me.”  “A presidential picture?,” Strossen asked.  “You know, you shake hands and smile, but you hate the other guy,” Mostert explained.  Not all is not flames and daggers between the respective heads of Strongman Champions League (Marcel Mostert, left) and Giants Live (Colin Bryce, right), though, and this weekend they will be joining forces in Kiev for a strongman extravaganza.  IronMind® | Randall J. Strossen photo.

Three strongman organizations, two body weight classes and one location will produce “two great shows at the same venue in the heart of Kiev,” Strongman Champion League’s Marcel Mostert told IronMind today.
“It will be a busy strongman day in Kiev on May 30,” said Mostert.  “The organizations UFSA, SCL and Giants Live will all work together to make two great shows on the same venue in the heart of Kiev.
“Fourteen [strongman] events will be done in total, probably the most events ever done in one day!  Giants Live will make its qualifier for World’s Strongest Man; and UFSA/SCL will make a great team event for 105-kg class, with Team Ukraine versus Team Europe.
“Vladimir and Olena Kiba, the main promoters, will work together with the crew of SCL and Giants Live,” Mostert said.  “Beautiful dancers, folklore, celebrities, strongmen, music, and a great venue will be the ingredients for a great day in strongman sport.”

Setting the stage for day two at SCL Finland in Ideapark, Ilkka Kinnunen told IronMind, “All the athletes looked fresh and ready for one of the heaviest deadlift events ever: The weight was 380kg!!”
Misha Koklyaev, winner of the 2010 SCL Finland strongman competition, did 7 reps on the 380-kg deadlift.
Remember, though, this is Finland, the home of really heavy strongman events.
“I interviewed Misha for Finnish TV and he said that ‘it was heaviest I have ever he has done in competition,’” Kinnunen said.  “But the results were amazing: Misha Koklajev did 7 reps, Terry Hollands did 6 reps and Agris Kazelniks did 5 reps.”
“After Deadlift, the athletes had one hour rest before hitting the Log Lift for Max event.  Again we saw some great lifts.  The winner, Vidas Blekaitis, did very easy 190 kg and he tried 200 kg, but a small injury in his shoulder prevented the last lift.  Second were Misha Koklayjev and Johannes Årsjö, both with 180kg, and then Terry Hollands with 175 kg.
“The last event of the competition was sack loading: 4 sacks and loading distance was 5 meters. The winner of the event was Travis Ortmayer at 20.25 seconds; second was Misha Koklyaev at 21.00 seconds, and third was Christian Savoie, at 21.56 seconds.

Here are the official final results:

1.  Misha Koklyaev 53.5
2.  Terry Hollands 46.0
3.  Travis Ortmayer 43.0
4.  Vidas Blekaitis 39.0
5.  Johannes Arsjo 36.0
6.  Agris Kazelniks 35.0
7.  Christian Savoie 35.0
8.  Konstantyn Ilin 17.5
9.  Jani Kolehmainen 13.0
10.  Juha Matti Jarvi (injured) 7.0

“Andrus Murumets won the Strongman Champions League competition at Ideapark last year, but who will win this year?,” contest promoter Ilkka Kinnunen asked.
Ideapark is the venue for the 2010 Strongman Champions League - Finland competition.
“The list of the athletes is strong,” Kinnunen told IronMind, as he ran through the lineup of top international strongman competitors ready to make their mark in Finland this weekend.

The start list includes three guys who have gotten off to a strong start already in the 2010 Strongman Champions League series:

• Misha Kokylaev—winner of SCL - FIBO
• Terry Hollands—overall SCL leader; runnerup in the Iceman Challenge and SCL - FIBO
• Travis Ortmayer—third in SCL - FIBO

And not to be taken lightly are such challengers as Vidas Blekaitis (runnerup at in SCL - Ideapark last year), Kinnunen pointed out.  A total of ten athletes will compete for the title.

“On Sunday evening we will see who will win 2010 SCL Finland,” Kinnunen said.

Misha Koklyaev Wins Strongman Champions League - FIBO: Terry Hollands, Overall SCL Leader

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2010 IronMind
“In a great battle last weekend, Misha  Koklyaev beat Terry Hollands by two points in the overall score,” Marcel Mostert reported to IronMind in what he call “a great [strongman] competition at the FIBO.”
With Travis Ortmayer in third place, and following 3.5 points behind him was Ervin Katona, it proves how hard the battle was.
“Ervin Katona started super, with a new personal record on the log lift with 185 kg.  He missed his last attempt, 195 kg, the same as Misha, and they both got first [place] on this event.  It was clear [immediately] that it wouldn’t be an easy game today.

“Thanks to the FIBO and the efforts of Heinz Ollesch with SCL, this first edition of the FIBO Strongman Champions League was a great success.  The crowd loved it, and we had a lot of good publicity.  I’m sure that strongman at the FIBO will get bigger and bigger in the coming years."
Based on his results at this competition, Koklyaev “brought home the 25 SCL points, which they can earn for a first place,” said Mostert.  “But Terry Hollands got his second second place, he s now the leader in SCL points after two stages."

Here are the top 10 results:

1.  Mikhail Koklyaev   63.0
2.  Terry Hollands      61.0
3.  Travis Ortmayer   57.5
4.  Ervin Katona        54.0
5.  Martin Wildauer    46.5
6.  Glenn Ross           37.0
7.  Jimmy Laureys     32.0
8.  Gregor Stegnar     26.5
9.  Patrik Baboumian  21.5
10.  Alex Moonen       20

"We already look already forward to be back at the FIBO in 2011," said Mostert, explaining that SCL had worked four years to "come to the stage that we wanted.  Next year we will do it again, and only [we will] try to do it better!"

by Randall J. Strossen, Ph.D. | ©2010 IronMind
When Strongman Champions League announced its Arctic strongman challenge, the question was raised, “Who will be the Iceman?”
And the answer is Zydrunas Savickas, Mr. Everything in strongman, as he won the inaugural SCL Iceman Challenge last weekend.
Holding a strongman contest an Arctic region sounds tough, but let’s remember that this is Finland, traditional home to the toughest of all strongman contest.  The weather was considered excellent because it was just a few degrees below 0 Celsius with sunny skies, so the stalwart strongman dug in and had at it—with Zydrunas Savickas winning in convincing style.  Terry Hollands finished a strong second and Kostiantyn Ilin was third, just edging Warrick Brant off the podium.

Here are the final points.

1.  Zydrunas Savickas   49.5
2.  Terry Hollands         41.0
3.  Kostiantyn Ilin         32.0
4.  Warrick Brant          31.5
5.  Juha Matti Jarvi        30.0
6.  Matt Wanat              28.5
7.  Agris Kazelniks        26.0
8.  Jani Kolehmainen     17.5
9.  Simon Sulaiman       14.0

This competition was a joint effort involving Strongman Champions League, Fitness Media and Naturpolis, Kinnunen told IronMind, adding “special thanks belong to local companies who made the event possible.”  Plans for next year’s contest have already begun, Kinnunen told IronMind.
